Phillippi Farmhouse Market is thriving as we enter southwest Florida’s most bountiful production season. While northern states are cold and plants are dormant, southwest Florida has an abundant variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and blooming plants. The market showcases farmers who grow their own produce. Our certified organic and hydroponic produce is grown locally. Talk with our farmers and they will tell you how they grow their produce using the most beneficial methods to ensure you purchase Florida’s finest.

This week the Phillippi Farmhouse Market welcomed two new vendors. Leah’s Lemonade is a family enterprise that gives a portion of their income to help feed children in Haiti. They squeeze fresh lemons for lemonade, mango, strawberry or raspberry lemonade depending on the freshness of the fruits available. Meet Leah and her family and enjoy freshly squeezed lemonade.

Sarasota Organic Tilapia Farm is a Sarasota enterprise whereby tilapia are grown in carefully controlled local ponds, fed certified organic feed and processed fresh for your enjoyment. It doesn’t get any fresher than that.

Other recent additions to the market include Full Belly Meats, Dogology, and Dynasty Guacamole. Full Belly Meats sells delicious stuffed burgers and breakfast burgers. Dogology features kettlecorn, cheddar corn, roasted peanuts, specialty pickles and stuffed olives. The guacamole guys at Dynasty Guacamole will prepare a batch before your eyes and let you sample their tasty creation.

Music continues to bring a happy atmosphere to the Market. Folks enjoy sitting at the picnic tables or on our Adirondack chairs while taking in the sunshine and activities of the Market. Of course, there’s always “dog watching” as we constantly have a pooch parade moving around the market.

Strawberries are especially delicious and sweet this year. We are Sarasota’s only mid-week Farmers Market and proud to feature local grown, certified organic, and hydroponic produce. We also have beautiful plants, hanging baskets, succulents, bromeliads, and a stunning variety of shrubs perfect for your home and garden.

The Market also features a variety of scrumptious bakery items and prepared foods for you to enjoy picnic style at the Market or take home for a delicious and easy meal. Browse among our local artisans and learn how they create their handicrafts.

The Market always features live music for you to enjoy. We even provide colorful Adirondack chairs so you can relax and listen to a variety of popular tunes and old favorites.

Last week’s Bodaciously Beautiful Valentine Basket was won by a couple vacationing on Siesta Key. They were delighted with the amazing assortment of products, gift certificates and discount coupons. Don’t worry – there will be more raffles, market events and specials coming up.

Remember, UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension holds free weekly classes at the Market from noon until 1 PM at the Edson Keith Mansion. This week’s class focuses on how to successfully winter prune your landscape ornamental plants.

Tips for Adding More Flavorful and Nutritious Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables to Your Diet

Locally-grown fruits and vegetables are coming in ripe and ready-to-eat every Wednesday at Phillippi Farmhouse Market. We have local cabbage, cantaloupes, carambolas, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, grapefruit and a variety of citrus, green beans, peppers, tomatoes and of course the sweetest local strawberries. With so many fresh choices the most difficult part might be making up your mind! If you have ever arrived home from the Market with armfuls of produce to a spouse inquiring how many people you’re intending to feed, then you know what we mean. Here are some tips for making the most of your pile of peppers or stockpile of strawberries:

When rinsing and slicing fresh fruits and vegetables, prepare more than you need and freeze what you don’t use for later.
Soups and stews are a great way to use extra vegetables. Half a pepper from last night’s fajitas or the remaining single serving of frozen corn can both be great additions to a quick and tasty black bean soup.
Strawberries and melons can last eight to twelve months frozen and are great to have on hand for easy smoothies.
If you have children or grandchildren, get them involved! Try letting children help choose vegetables – it’s fun, educational and they’ll be more likely to eat vegetables they choose.

Local strawberries are the sweetest ever this year, so planto buy several pints when you’re shopping at the market this Wednesday.

Andspeaking of strawberries…we have a strawberry event for you!

When you enter the market this Wednesday, you will quickly see that everyother vendor has a basket of berries and a stack of those little green berrybaskets. The deal is very simple! When you make a purchase from a vendorwith strawberries, that merchant will give you a basket and a strawberry. As you go around the market, you will get a strawberry for each purchase from aparticipating vendor. This week it’s even-numbered vendors and thefollowing Wednesday will be the odd-numbers. When you have finished touring themarket and doing your shopping, please take your berries to the green Welcome tent at the front of the market whereyou will get 1 raffle ticket for each berry. Phillippi Farmhouse Market moves into 2012 with new vendors, high energy and a New Year’s Resolution to be your favorite weekday Farmers Market.

On Wednesday, January 11th we'll feature vocalist Jimmy Mazz. Think Sinatra-style music with Golden Oldies as well as fresh new songs. Jimmy puts on a real show, so come on out and enjoy this delightful musical performance made possible by Brown’s Grove.

Right now strawberries are coming in sweeter than ever. They’re field-fresh, picked the day before the Market! And if that doesn’t have your mouth watering, we’ve added chili, pulled pork and all the sides. Plus, there’s always a hot cup of fresh-brewed coffee to take the chill off the morning.

As always, well-mannered dogs on leash are welcomed at Phillippi Farmhouse Market. Many vendors even put out water bowls for our canine friends.

Of course, there’s always ample free parking, handicap accessibility and our Veggie Valet (which lets you pick up your purchases at the Welcome booth).

We are also delighted that Washington Perry of Perry's Original Roadside BBQ is serving his delicious barbeque and sides at the market. Also joining the Market in December was Lily the Lash. Here you’ll find local author Julie Woik with her books and an assortment of playful ways to teach children important life lessons. Be sure to look for our regular vendors too! Some of them took time to be with their families during the holidays and are now back and looking forward to seeing you again.

The class offered this week by the UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension Office is titled “Care of Your Holiday Winter Plants” and will be held in the historic Edson Keith Mansion from noon to 1:00 pm. Come and learn how to keep your holiday plants, such as trees and poinsettias, both beautiful and safe.

On December 21^st the class will be titled “Container Organic Gardening”. Sometimes growing fruits and vegetables in containers is the best option to consider. Learn about the many options available for “container” gardening.

Jim Urbaniak of Transatlantic Sausage Company and Karl Schoenberger of Old Heidelberg Pastry are merging. Jim’s sausage-making business is expanding while Karl will increase his bakery offerings from a newly renovated location on Gulf Gate Drive. Congrats to both of them!

Community Haven – nursery manager Carolyn Marchbank and her assistant Jim will have beautiful poinsettias this week as well as many stories about their new grandsons.

ECO Essentials/Up-Cycled Fashions – Jodi and Jill want to remind all of their customers that all of their products are environmentally friendly.

Gluten Free by Beverly – owner Beverly Scott has a number of gluten-free pizzas and lasagnas this week. Her products were developed as a result of her childhood adverse experience with products containing gluten. See how “normal” a gluten-free pizza can taste!

Hanamade Art – Hana’s designs her own products and has a number of wooden, movable, non-lead toys as well as bath and beach towel creations. She is originally from the Czech Republic and is working on her English language skills.

Haraki Gordon Tea Company – Izumi’s father, Takao, fresh from Japan, will be at the market this week sharing his extensive knowledge of tea production. All of their tea is shipped weekly from the family plantation in Shizuoka, Japan.

My Garden Products – owner Carmel Monti will educate you about the joys of composting and vertical gardening as well as his soon-to-be-born grandson.

My Sweetest Honey – Shawn Knepp will not only offer some of the best honey on the market but will tell you an amazing story about a young girl going into diabetic shock at a local farmers market. Shawn’s honey was given to the girl which helped save her life!

Old Heidelberg Pastry Shop – reminds you to check out their Christmas stolen, gingerbread and traditional Christmas cookies this week.

Roverta’s French Crepes – will feature special “fruit jubilee” crepes this week made using delicious local strawberries together with bananas and cream for a real holiday treat.

Classes

The class offered this week by the UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension Office is titled “Rain Barrel Workshop” and will be held in the historic Edson Keith Mansion from noon to 1:00 pm. Learn how to use rain barrels to conserve water, save money by reducing the use of potable water in landscapes (lower utility bills), and reduce storm water runoff. Practical tips on the construction and installation of rain barrels will be provided

On December 7th a class, titled “Edible Flowers From Your Garden” will be offered from noon to 1:00 pm. Learn which plants and flowers are edible. They will add color to your dishes as well as flavor and nutritious tastes.

On December 14^th the class offered will be titled “Take Care of Your Holiday Winter Plants” while on the 21^st the class will be titled “Container Organic Gardening”.

Last season the educational classes were attended by 299 people with an average class size of 19. Attendance this season has already been increasing so remember to “mark your calendar”!

Our growing season in SouthWest Florida is November through April, so expect to see an abundance of local fruits and vegetables available weekly. The Phillippi Farmhouse Market seasonal re-opening last week was a grand success! The market will again be open every Wednesday from November through April from 9 am until 2 pm. We’re proud to be Sarasota’s only mid-week market with over 50 vendors offering the freshest local produce, including certified organic and hydroponic fruits and vegetables. The prepared foods vendors have an incredible assortment of nibbles and meals to enjoy at our picnic tables or to take home for a really easy and tasty dinner. Enjoy visiting our bakery vendors who specialize in unusual gourmet treats. The craftsmen in our market use re-cycled, sustainable Florida materials in their handicrafts while our Master Gardeners offer free advice on how to solve your gardening problems and are a wonderful resource. Stop by the Extension tent next to the Welcome tent and visit – they will gladly share their extensive knowledge of gardening with you.

Also, the market has a “Veggie Valet” (also known as package pick-up) where you may leave your parcels while you continue shopping. There is ample free parking, handicap accessibility and public restrooms.

Get ready for the re-opening of the Phillippi Farmhouse Market at 9 am on Wednesday, November 2nd. The market features local produce, plants, and delicious prepared foods and baked goods to enjoy picnic-style at the market or to take home. Our specialty and sustainable vendors have beautiful and unique crafts, and we also feature Florida agricultural goods. Most excitingly, the market has expanded to 54 vendors!

The Sarasota Concert Band will perform from 10:00 to 11:00 am on stage and there will be hourly raffles. Just sign up at the WELCOME tent as you enter the market. Please know that the Phillippi Farmhouse Market will not share, sell, or trade your personal information on your free raffle ticket. Our friendly volunteers at the WELCOME tent can answer all your questions and even hold your purchases at our Veggie Valet (also known as package pick-up) while you continue shopping. Also at our WELCOME tent will be the UF/IFAS Sarasota County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners. These experts will help you with your horticultural questions.

Phillippi Farmhouse Market is getting ready to welcome our 3^rd season of bringing the freshest local fruit, produce and plants to Sarasota. The Market opens Wednesday, November 2 and continues every Wednesday through April 25 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. We are a unique weekday market with over 50 local vendors, including prepared foods to eat picnic-style at the market or take home for a delicious easy meal. We also feature local artisans and hand-crafted products, sustainable goods and Florida agricultural products.

Each week the market features local musicians and encourages everyone to visit our Friends of Sarasota County Parks Welcome Tent at the entry to the market. Sign up to join Friends of Sarasota County Parks and volunteer at Phillippi Estate Park or the local Sarasota County Park nearest you. At the green Welcome Tent you will also find UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension’s master gardeners who answer all your horticulture questions and have a wealth of information.

The market has easy entry off U.S. 41 at the traffic light at Constitution Boulevard, (see Directions and Parking tab in this web site) ample free parking, handicap accessibility and public restrooms. There will be two classes offered this week by the UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension Office; the first is titled “Introduction to Honeybee Keeping” and will be held in the historic Edson Keith Mansion from 9:30 to 11:30 am while the second is titled “Rain Barrel Workshop” and will also be held in the Mansion from noon to 1:00 pm.

The Honeybee Workshop is offered in partnership with the Suncoast Beekeeper Association and will address all aspects of starting and managing your own beekeeping operation. The Rain Barrel Workshop will focus on the construction and use of rain barrels to both conserve water and improve the environment.

The February 23 class provided by the UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension will be Storm Protection: Hurricane Shutters given by Betty Alpaugh, Education Specialist. The class will be from 12 noon to 1:00 pm and will be held in the historic Edson Keith Mansion. Have you done all that you should to prepare your home for a storm? Learn about some of the different types of hurricane shuttering systems that can help to protect your property in the case of a high wind event. The benefits and limitations of various shutter systems will be discussed. We hope that you will join us for this class! We have two new vendors joining the Market: Suncoast Gourmet and Wild Tile. Suncoast Gourmet features locally made oils, and dry mixes including soup mix, beer bread mix, cheesecake mix, cake in a mug mix and others. Free samples will be given out each week.

Wild Tile offers “Serenity Pots” using the principle of aromatherapy by combining the fragrance of organic herbs and the color of locally grown flowers to add serenity to your home, patio, bath, or lanai. They also have handmade tiled items and they do custom tile pieces if you would like to match an area in your home or pool.

Learning the Basics of Container Gardening

The noontime Extension classes at the Phillippi Farmhouse Market kept rolling into its 3rd week when over 30 people attended the January 19th, 2011 workshop called "Container Gardening". Dr. K (aka Robert Kluson) provided hands-on demonstrations as an introduction to the basics of mini-gardening or container gardening. The information explained many aspects of the design, construction, and management of growing backyard vegetables in different types of containers, e.g., Earthbox, Bucket Brigade, and Grow Soxx.

There was a hands-on demonstration of how to make your own organic potting soil that incorporates inoculants of beneficial soil microbes, e.g., mycorrhizae. After the presentation, Dr. K conducted a guided tour of some vendors in the Phillippi Farmhouse Market who sell supplies and equipment for mini-gardening. The workshop is the second installment of the "Edible Yard" Backyard Gardening Series which is featured every other Wednesday.

The topic of the next workshop is "Attracting Beneficial Insects to Your Garden". It is scheduled for February 2, 2011 and registration is available on-line.

Dutch Boy Donuts are bringing their brand new 100% whole wheat donut to the market along with their regular glazed donut that has been such a hit for many years. The new donut is chemical free and non GMO (genetically modified).

The first picking of Plant City strawberries will be available at Brown's Grove. There will be plenty of local grown beets, lettuce, sweet corn, radishes, squash and heirloom tomatoes. Big Olaf Donuts is back again this year and the donuts are absolutely scrumptious. They are made with 8 basic ingredients, all natural, no preservatives or flavorings, and made from scratch. Visiting Nurses will be giving Flu, Pneumonia and Tetanus Shot at the November 10, and 17 Markets for persons age 9 and up. Flu Shots are $25, Pneumonia Shots are $45, Tetanus are $40 to $60. Habitat for Humanity Sarasota, Inc. will have an information booth the month of November featuring services they offer. Habitat's ReStore generates funds to build affordable homes for working families in need. COMING SOON a new ReStore II at 4408 Bee Ridge Road in the Palm Plaza on the corner of Bee Ridge Road and McIntosh Road next to Save-A-Lot Food store. ReStore II is a source of used but serviceable materials for sale. Habitat provides free pick up of donations and a tax receipt with a warm "thank you. Your donations are re-cycled in a way that adds value to people's lives and our community. Donations also reduce pressure on the Sarasota County landfill site.

Miracle Pooh Plant Food will be available at Mothers Organics. Never heard of it? The pooh is a blend of chicken, buffalo, worm, cow, horse, and pig manure. Just add one tablespoon of this stuff to your plants and Mother Earth will love you.

Fall is here and the weather is looking perfect for the grand re-opening of the Phillippi Farmhouse Market. Brown's Grove & Produce has the following citrus varieties available now: Flame Red Grapefruit, Navels, Ambersweet Oranges, Falglo Tangerines. Our citrus is naturally colored by nature which requires cool nights. We do not chemically degreen our citrus; these varieties are ripe and ready to eat. Try a sample at the market! We will also have locally grown tomatoes, cukes, Athena cantaloupes, watermelons, peppers, south Florida corn and more!

At Sarasota Fountain Werks we create and hand make one of a kind water fountains for use indoors and out. Our fountains are great gifts and conversation pieces as they appear to be magically pouring endless water from a floating faucet.
